Kansas Tree Farm System

The American Tree Farm System is a national program of nearly 90,000 individuals and families, of which about 140 are from Kansas, whose woodlands are certified by a Kansas Forest Service forester when they are managed in a way that protects watersheds, wildlife habitat, conserves soil, provides recreational opportunities and produces wood products. In Kansas, the American Tree Farm System is operated by a State Tree Farm Committee.

Who qualifies for the Tree Farm Program?

  • Own at least 10 acres or more of contiguous forestland
  • Have a Forest Stewardship Management Plan
  • Ensure enough trees remain after timber harvests through proper tree selection, encouraging natural regeneration, and replanting openings.
  • Minimize disturbances adjacent to streams
  • Be protected from fire and destructive grazing
  • Maintain or enhance habitat for fish, wildlife and plants listed in the forest management plan.
  • Recognize historical, biological, archaeological, cultural, and geological sites of special interest
  • Recognize and protect the aesthetic value of the forest

Benefits of Belonging

There is no cost for membership. A landowner only has to meet the qualifications mentioned above. Numerous benefits are associated with membership in the Tree Farm system. They are as follows:
  • A metal Tree Farm sign and certificate
  • A free one-year subscription to Tree Farmer magazine, The Practical Guide to Sustainable Forestry
  • Invitations to seminars, field days and workshops to learn more about successfully managing woodlands and tree plantings and "networking" opportunities with other landowners
  • A re-certification inspection from a forester at least every 5 years
  • People maybe honored or memorialized through the Memorial Honors Giving Program. Donations to the program provide critical support for forestry education, research and outreach to family forestland owners in Kansas.

To get started, checkout the Tree Farm Brochure or contact your local District Forester. Additional information may be found at the American Tree Farm System website.
